Bad Homburg. In May, the German passenger car market grew by 9.1 percent year-on-year. A total of 332,962 new passenger cars were registered. However, May had 1.7 working days more than in the previous year.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of the year, the Federal Motor Transport Authority has recorded 1.52 million new registrations. This corresponds to an increase of 1.7 percent. The VDIK members sold 588,274 new passenger cars between January and May, achieving a market share of 38.6 percent (previous year: 38.2 percent).<\/p>\n
VDIK President Reinhard Zirpel: “The passenger car market as a whole remains on course. In May, it reached its highest level since the 2009 environmental bonus year. Private registrations at a high level together with an increase in commercial registrations ensured a strong market”.<\/p>\n
Private new registrations rose by 4.5 percent to 123,500 units in May. Over the year as a whole, the private market contracted slightly, but still reached its second-highest level since 2009. Import brands increased their share of private registrations to over 47 percent (previous year 45.9 percent).<\/p>\n
New registrations of diesel passenger cars have risen by 4.5 percent since the beginning of 2019 compared with the same period last year. This means that 33.2\u00a0percent of all new cars with diesel engines were delivered in the first five months (previous year: 32.3 percent).<\/p>\n
