A total of 1,402,789 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in the first half of 2025<\/strong> – 793,889 of them with alternative drive systems (purely electric, hybrids with and without plugs and gas-powered). This is 23.0% more than in the same period last year. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of alternative drive systems was 44.4% in the first six months of the year. The share of new registrations with alternative drive systems in the overall market rose to 56.6% between January and June 2025, compared to 43.9% in the first half of 2024. In June, the market for alternative drive systems grew by 11.0% to 147,468 units, with international brands accounting for around 45.4%.<\/p>\n

New registrations of purely battery electric passenger cars (BEV)<\/strong> increased by a total of 35.1% to 248,726 units in the first half of 2025. This is more than in the strongest half of 2023 to date, bringing the BEV share of total new passenger car registrations to 17.7%. International manufacturers were able to increase BEV registrations by 45.1% to 98,098 vehicles. This puts the share of international manufacturers in the BEV market at 39.4% since the beginning of the year. With 47,163 vehicles (+8.6%), growth in the BEV market in June was more subdued than in previous months, although the BEV market share of 18.4% was the second highest in a year and a half. The share of international brands was above average at 42.5% in June.<\/p>\n

“More battery electric vehicles were registered in the first half of 2025 than in the strongest half of 2023 to date. This shows that electric mobility is being accepted by more and more customers as a climate-neutral alternative that is suitable for everyday use. However, this encouraging development should not obscure the fact that the 17.7% share of BEVs in new registrations is still nowhere near enough to meet the EU’s fleet limits. This would require an electric share of 20 to 25 percent by 2025,” says VDIK President Imelda Labb\u00e9.<\/p>\n

New registrations of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV)<\/strong> also recorded a very significant increase in the first half of 2025. A total of 138,905 PHEVs rolled onto the roads, 55.1% more than in the same period last year. The share of all new passenger car registrations rose to 9.9%, compared to 6.1% in the first half of 2024. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of plug-in hybrids rose by 5.8 percentage points to 42.0% in the first half of the year. In June, 66.4 percent more PHEVs were newly registered than in the same month last year, which corresponds to 25,608 passenger cars and a market share of 10.0 percent.<\/p>\n

Together, electric vehicles<\/strong> (BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) have thus achieved a market share of 27.6% with 387,674 new registrations since the beginning of the year. This corresponds to an increase of 41.6% compared to the same period last year. In June 2025, 72,790 electric cars were newly registered (+23.8%), giving them a market share of 28.4%.<\/p>\n

Hybrid vehicles without plugs<\/strong> have seen an increase of 9.9% since the beginning of the year. 399,966 new registrations correspond to a 28.5% share of passenger car registrations (first half of 2024: 24.7%). The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of hybrids was 47.4%. In June, the hybrid market grew by 1.0% compared to the same month of the previous year, which was strong due to special effects, with 73,332 newly registered vehicles and a market share of 28.6%.<\/p>\n

In addition, 6,246 LPG passenger cars<\/strong> (-20.1%) have been newly registered since the beginning of the year. In June, new registrations of LPG passenger cars amounted to 1,346 units (-7.7%).<\/p>\n

New registrations of combustion passenger cars reached 608,841 units between January and June 2025, of which 397,459 were petrol<\/strong> (-27.8%) and 211,382 diesel<\/strong> (-23.2%). The share of petrol cars in passenger car registrations was 28.3%, while diesel cars accounted for 15.1%. In June, 73,041 petrol cars (-34.6 percent) and 35,665 diesel cars (-32.3 percent) were newly registered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
