E-cars slump in January, hybrids gain

New registrations of vehicles with alternative drive systems fell by 9 percent in January. Electric vehicles recorded the sharpest decline, down 32 percent. Hybrids, on the other hand, increased by 19 percent.

Due to the significantly lower subsidies since the beginning of the year, only 27,008 new e-cars were registered in January (minus 32 percent). New registrations of plug-in hybrids fell particularly sharply, by 53 percent to just 8,853 units. In addition, 18,136 purely electric passenger cars took to the roads (down 13 percent). The share of e-vehicles fell to 15 percent in January, down from an average of 31 percent in 2022.

There were also 41,919 new unplugged hybrids registered in January (up 19 percent). Among the hybrids were 6,890 full hybrids, up 40 percent. These vehicles are 96 percent from VDIK brands.

Gasoline-powered vehicles also increased slightly. A total of 69,922 passenger cars with gasoline engines were newly registered (plus 3 percent). Their share of the total market was 39 percent in January, diesel passenger cars came in at 22 percent.

The VDIK regularly updates the list of electric vehicles from international manufacturers. The VDIK member companies currently offer around 200 electric models (passenger cars and commercial vehicles) that customers can order in Germany. The VDIK Electric List can be accessed here.
